Listening Guide
A simple practice for understanding people before trying to help them.
Before we speak,
we learn to listen.
Before we offer answers,
we learn to hear stories.
Because every person carries experiences we cannot see.
Begin listening.
Why Listening Matters
Every person has a story.
Every story deserves to be heard.
People rarely remember our best advice.
They remember when someone truly listened.
Listening slows us down.
It replaces assumptions with understanding.
It helps us discover where God is already at work in someone's life.
Listening is an act of love.
Listening isn't waiting for your turn to speak.
It isn't preparing the perfect answer.
It isn't trying to fix someone's life.
Listening begins with humility.
It values people before opinions.
It welcomes silence.
It asks thoughtful questions.
When we listen with compassion,
we reflect the heart of Christ.
What are we listening for?
As you spend time with people, listen beneath the words.
Notice:
• What brings this person joy?
• What burdens are they carrying?
• What hopes have they almost given up on?
• Where do they experience loneliness?
• Who has invested in them?
• Who do they trust?
• What questions keep returning?
• Where might God already be inviting them forward?
Don't rush toward solutions.
Stay curious.
Listen longer than feels comfortable.
Remember
Listening is a gift.
People don't need perfect answers.
They need to know they have been heard.
Every meaningful conversation begins with attention.
Every healthy relationship begins with trust.
Every faithful leader learns to listen before leading.
